Charlie Hunnam To Lead Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video Series ‘Criminal’

Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Rebel Moon) is set to lead Ed Brubaker’s Prime Video graphic novel series Criminal. He joins the previously announced series regular cast of Adria Arjona, Richard Jenkins and Kadeem Hardison.

Criminal is an interlocking universe of crime stories based on the multi-Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series created by Brubaker and Sean Phillips.

Hunnam stars as the protagonist, Leo, a brilliant master thief who sees all the angles, and specializes in plans with no guns and no violence. Like a chess player, Leo thinks three moves ahead. Other crooks think he’s a coward, especially compared to his father Tommy, who went to jail for murdering the most feared man in the city, Teeg Lawless.

As Deadline previously revealed exclusively, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden are confirmed to direct the first four episodes. The series is executive produced by Brubaker and Jordan Harper, alongside Phillips, Sarah Carbiener and Phillip Barnett. Legendary Television will also serve as an executive producer. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

Hunnam is best known for bringing to life the character of Jackson “Jax” Teller in FX’s Sons of Anarchy, a role he portrayed across the motorcycle drama’s 7 seasons. He followed that with roles in Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword; James Gray’s Lost City of Z with Sienna Miller and Robert Pattinson; Papillon for Michael Noer, alongside Rami Malek and Eve Hewson; and Jungleland for Max Winkler. He also collaborated with Justin Kurzel on The True History of the Kelly Gang and reunited with Guy Ritchie on The Gentlemen in 2019.

Hunnam returned to TV two years ago to lead Apple’s Shantaram, which is based on Gregrory David Roberts’ best-selling novel. He was most recently seen in Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon for Netflix.

Additional credits include the independent film Green Street Hooligans about the violent world of soccer shenanigans opposite Elijah Wood; starring opposite Clive Owen in Alfonso Curaon’s apocalyptic drama Children of Men; playing the lead in the big screen adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel Nicholas Nickelby; and appearing as ‘Bosie’ in the Miramax feature Cold Mountain for director Anthony Minghella based on the best-selling novel by Charles Frazier.

He is repped by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA, and Sloan Offer Weber and Dern, LLP
