In his opening monologue, Golden Globe host Jo Koy quoted his mom’s saying about Meryl Streep: “She wins everything.”
With multi-Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe winner Streep and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham among the nominees in the stacked Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category, it is not surprising that Elizabeth Debicki looked stunned when her name was read as the winner.
She got the trophy for playing Diana on the sixth and final season of Netflix’s The Crown, which chronicles the late Princess’ final weeks before her tragic 1997 death.
“This is just astonishing to me,” Debicki said onstage. “Thank you to the creatives on the show for trusting me with this part, to the cast and crew, and to my beautiful pretend children who I just adore,” she said, referring to the young actors playing Prince William and Prince Harry on the British Royal family drama. She also payed tribute to her late godmother.
Debicki played Princess Diana in Seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown, receiving Golden nominations both times. This is her first win.
Debicki won in a category that also included Meryl Streep (Only Murders in the Building), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Abby Elliot (The Bear), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets) and J. Smith-Cameron (Succession).
